MORE ABOUT YOPCOD-SL

How We Got Here

Children and youth in particular are the most affected in the communities, most especially the rural areas of Sierra Leone. There is incapacity in governance practices, respect for human rights introspect of children and youth, community development, youth participation and tolerance seem to be on low receding tide. Government initiatives do not reach many people in the rural communities because of many constraints on Government side. Since the end of the war and the past Ebola epidemic, families and communities are struggling to rebuild their lives; human right violations and illiteracy are on the increase despite the paces made by the other organizations in the country. Against this back drop YOPCOD-SL was established on 3rd April, 2016 by Dauda Bindi and other youths, wanted to see youth participate in community development using their Information & Communication skills to help reduce the risk of becoming involved in unsafe activities. Being involved in community activities has been shown to be a protective factor--that is, it helps young people to make healthy choices. It is registered with the Ministry of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs and it is expected to be also registered at the national level with Ministry of Economic Planning and Development. YOPCOD is a civil society and human rights organization focusing on youths in particular; empowering them through Education and life skills programmes, Freedom from Violence and exploitation, Gender Equality and the participation of youth in community developments for all. It is an indigenous Non-profit organization that is non- profit making, and non-Governmental.

Girls ICT empowerment

ICT is an enabling environment for economic growth. ICT improves business, education and employment opportunities. Moreover, ICT facilitates communication between people, since it increases social interaction. If access to, and use of ICT, is directly linked to social and economic development, then it is imperative to ensure that youths in developing countries understand the significance of these technologies and use them in order to contribute effectively in their countries’ development.
On this motive, YOPCOD-SL is committed in creating the platform where these digital opportunities will be access by young people
